Warst du Teil der Werkstatt der Kulturen (WdK) zwischen 1993 und 2019?Hast du dort getanzt, organisiert, performt oder Veranstaltungen besucht?
Die Künstlerin Juana Awad, Fellow bei inherit. heritage in transformation, lädt ein zu COMMUNITY MACHT ARCHIV – einer Reihe offener Archivsitzungen, in denen sie gemeinsam mit ehemaligen Beteiligten der WdK Archivmaterialien sichtet, erinnert und reflektiert. Die sechs Sitzungen im Juli und September sind Teil ihres künstlerisch-kuratorischen Forschungsprojekts: Transcultural Heritage. Curating Time-based Arts, the Werkstatt der Kulturen and the Making of the Postmigrant Nation.
Von 1993 bis 2019 war die Werkstatt der Kulturen die einzige staatlich geförderte Kulturinstitution in Berlin, die sich der Präsentation von Kunst und Kultur von und mit migrantischen und minorisierten Communities widmete. Mit mehr als fünfzig Veranstaltungen pro Monat – Festivals, Konzerte, Community-Treffen, Symposien – war sie ein zentraler Ort des transkulturellen Austauschs. Hier trafen sich Künstler*innen, Veranstaltende und Publikum, die den postmigrantischen und antikolonialen Kulturdiskurs in Berlin prägten.
Heute werden die hinterlassenen Materialien – Dokumente, Videos, Audioaufnahmen – vom Migrationsrat Berlin e.V. betreut. Diese Materialien bilden noch kein abgeschlossenes Archiv, sondern befinden sich im Prozess der Erschließung – im Rahmen von Awads Forschungsprojekt. In diesem Kontext arbeitet die Künstlerin bis zum Ende ihres Fellowships vor Ort im Tieranatomischen Theater (TA T) mit dem Material.
Für sie sind weniger die Dokumente selbst entscheidend, sondern die Geschichten, Künste und Politiken, auf die sie verweisen – die sie jedoch nie vollständig abbilden können.
Komme ich in diesen Dokumenten vor? Und wenn ja, wie?
Was passiert, wenn dieses entstehende Archiv institutionalisiert wird?
Was geschieht mit meinen Geschichten und denen meiner Community?
Wer darf mich repräsentieren?

Diese Fragen versteht Awad als offene Einladung an die Community, ihre Recherchen gemeinsam mit ihr zu befragen, weiterzudenken und Zeit mit dem Material zu verbringen.

Juana Awad ist eine kolumbianisch-kanadische Kuratorin, Künstlerin, Dozentin und Forscherin mit Sitz in Berlin. Sie arbeitet an den Schnittstellen von ästhetischer Theorie und Praxis. Ihr zentrales Interesse gilt dem Zusammenspiel kuratorischer und dekolonialer Praktiken, den Auswirkungen institutioneller Prozesse auf die Rezeption von Kunst sowie dem politischen Potenzial künstlerischer und kultureller Präsentationsformen.
Ausgehend von dekolonialen Denkansätzen historisiert Awad in ihrer aktuellen Arbeit diasporische kuratorische Praktiken im postmigrantischen Deutschland. Sie hat für verschiedene Film- und Kunstinstitutionen kuratiert und international große Kunst- und Forschungsprojekte geleitet.
Zu ihren jüngsten Projekten zählen die Mitherausgabe des Bands Blurred Territories: Kunst / Gestaltung / Forschung(Berlin: Form+Zweck, 2023) sowie eine kuratorische Intervention im Sammelband Künste dekolonisieren. Ästhetische Praktiken des Lernens und Verlernens (Bielefeld: Transcript, 2023).
Derzeit ist Awad als künstlerische Forscherin und Dozentin an der weißensee kunsthochschule berlin tätig.

Call for those who played, danced, created, gathered at Werkstatt der Kulturen (1993–2019)
Were you part of the Werkstatt der Kulturen (WdK) between 1993 and 2019?
Did you play, dance, organize, perform, meet, or create in its spaces?
Artist Juana Awad, fellow at inherit. heritage in transformation, invites you to take part in COMMUNITY MACHT ARCHIV, a series of open research sessions based on conversation and shared review of archival material from the WdK. The 6 sessions between July and September are part of her artistic-curatorial research project: Transcultural Heritage. Curating Time-based Arts, the Werkstatt der Kulturen and the Making of the Postmigrant Nation.
From 1993 to 2019, the Werkstatt der Kulturen (WdK) was the only state-funded cultural institution in Berlin dedicated to presenting arts and culture by and with migrant and minoritized communities. Hosting over fifty events per month—festivals, concerts, community meetings, symposia—the WdK became a central site for transcultural exchange. It brought together artists, organizers, and publics who shaped Berlin’s (post)migrant and anticolonial cultural discourse. Today, the materials left behind —documents, videos, audio recordings—are being cared for by Migrationsrat Berlin e.V.. These materials are not yet an archive, but are currently in the process of becoming one, as part of Awad’s artistic-curatorial project. As part of this process, the artist is working with the materials on site at the Tieranatomisches Theater (TA T) until the end of her fellowship. For her, more interesting than the materials left by the WdK are the stories of the people, the arts, and the politics to which they refer—but which they can never fully represent.
Do I appear among these documents? How? What happens when this archive in the making becomes institutionalized? What happens to my stories and to my community’s stories? Who gets to represent me? Who gets to feel that they know me without having even met me?
The artist extends these questions as an open community invitation to spend time with her research, revisitingand engaging with written, video, and audio materials from the WdK archive and reflecting on how the stories of the WdK live on.

Juana Awad is a Colombian-Canadian curator, artist, lecturer and researcher based in Berlin, who works at the intersections of aesthetic theory and practice. Her principal interests lie in the intermingling of curatorial and decolonial practices, the effects of institutional processes on the reception of art, and the political potential of arts and culture presenting. Firmly based on decolonial conceptual frameworks, her current work historicises diasporic curatorial practices in postmigrant Germany. She has curated for various film and arts institutions and led large arts and research initiatives internationally. Recent projects include co-editing the volume Blurred Territories: Kunst / Gestaltung / Forschung (Berlin: Form+Zweck, 2023), and the curatorial intervention in the volume Künste dekolonisieren. Ästhetische Praktiken des Lernens und Verlernens (Bielefeld: Transcript, 2023). Awad is currently artistic researcher and lecturer at the weißensee school of art and design berlin.
